Home Made Cakes & Jams
The Summer Show has always been the highlight of the Society’s year; a quote
from a local paper dated 1937 speaks of the visitors to the 37th Summer Show
enjoying “Arcadian happiness”. This feeling of pleasure in old-fashioned things
is maintained in our current-day shows. This year, as usual, expect to enjoy the
plant stall, tombola, bric-a-brac, home made cakes, children’s games along with
refreshments, maypole dancers and of course the wonderful domestic and
horticultural exhibits.

History
The PHS dates back to at least 1895, but the earliest item in the records is the
10th Summer Show in July 1905, when there were classes for Cottagers and
Allotment Holders, Amateur Subscribers and children under 15. The early
schedules and minutes of meetings are a record of social history and make
fascinating reading. They include advertisements for the shops which once lined
Petersham Road.
New members are very welcome: The annual subscription is just £1.00 per household, though members are encouraged to give more. The
Society is not a charitable organisation, but local causes are supported.
