Petersham & Ham Sea Scouts

Fun in the River

The Petersham and Ham Sea Scouts are one of the oldest scout troops still in existence, not just in average age of the leaders but also in the age of the buns in the freezer. We can trace our roots (and some of the buns) back to 1908 and have been in continuous operation since then. That is why our leaders look so tired. It has been estimated that the combined age of the committee alone exceeds 1000 years - before the Norman conquest, so it stands to reason that we must know what we are doing by now! Read about our history here.

During this time the troop has endured many interesting events; the scout hut has burned down on several occasions (which is why we are called the Phoenix troop), world wars have come and gone, though a corner of our field still contains the remnants of an old Spitfire from the last one, we have survived the rising Thames tide levels and Leaders, parents and friends have survived repeated attempts to poison them during celebrity dinner nights.

Sea Scouts News Summer 2006

With the longer evenings Scouts are back to enjoying the great outdoors. Boats have been out on the moorings for the last three weeks. Younger Scouts had a nautical skills camp in Douglas House Meadow, the scout field, to teach them the basics of safe boating. The camp finished with a spit-roasted lamb organised by Radio Ron our amateur radio enthusiast. Scores of families came to enjoy the lamb , try out boating in the scout skiffs and attend the AGM. Scouts had a weekend on the Grand Union Canal in a canal boat. To try boating further afield Scouts and Explorers will be joining the Netherlands Sea Scout Camp near Arnhem for their 2006 summer camp.

Before going to foreign parts, Richmond upon Thames Scout District will be celebrating 99 years of scouting during a camp across the river in Marble Hill. All uniformed members in the District will be camping except for the Beavers who will be going on a day visit.

Come and join us for Sunday Teas during sunny Sunday afternoons from about 14.00 to 17.00. We boast peace and tranquility and plenty of room in our meadow for children and dogs to play.
