London's Arcadia Project:
The Thames Landscape Strategy in Action

London's Arcadia is the largest open space of its kind in London covering the stretch of the Thames running from Teddington to Petersham to Richmond Hill to Kew. Along the River with its associated flora and wildlife, it is home to the highest concentration of historic buildings, landscape gardens, famous avenues, vistas and sightlines in England. The wealth of heritage has potential to provide a range of cultural, physical, educational, conservation and recreation benefits for the enjoyment of all.

The Thames Path National Trail:
Richmond to Hampton Court via Petersham

The interesting town of Richmond is the start point for this walk, where the Thames takes on a more rural feel. From Richmond you pass through Petersham Meadow, past Marble Hill House and Ham House, through quite rural settings to Teddington Lock and Weir, which is the point at which the Thames is no longer tidal. From Teddington you continue into the town of Kingston-upon-Thames, which has an attractive market place, then on along the edge of Hampton Court Park to the historic Hampton Court Palace.

Petersham Trust

The residents of Petersham and much further afield became concerned during the 1990s by the growing risk that commercial pressures would lead to valued amenity of cattle grazing on the Meadow being lost for ever. So, in the 1990s as in the 1890s the public decided action was needed to protect one of the delights of Richmond. The Petersham Trust was formed in 1998 with the aims of ensuring the cows remained on the Meadows in perpetuity and that the buildings be rebuilt and restored to allow farming activities to continue. After a long uphill struggle, a lease agreement was signed with Richmond Council on 30 October 2001 to take over the management of the Meadows.
